Noxturne is a fantasy / thriller that follows a world-renowned pianist whose life is shattered after a devastating accident leaves her wheelchair-bound and dependent on her younger boyfriend as both caregiver and companion. As her recovery becomes increasingly isolating, disturbing visions, fractured memories, and dangerous obsessions begin to blur the line between reality and nightmare.

Drawing from Klebe’s own recovery following a life-altering spinal injury, Noxturne blends psychological suspense with dreamlike surrealism, exploring themes of bodily vulnerability, control, desire, and identity through a distinctly female lens.

In a new exclusive interview on Horror Valentines, Ella spoke with writer and director Kristina Klebe about Noxturne, produced by Wolf Kitten Pictures.

Kristina, Noxturne dives into a deeply emotional journey that is also very personal - what more can you tell us about this core focus or mission behind your current work, and what are you hoping to contribute to the wider genre landscape?

I want to make movies that break all the formulas in all ways, including equitable hiring. I want to tell stories that are meaningful, personal and yes sometimes scary - in the way that healing or going through a difficult time in life can be terrifying. But I also want to convey a sense of hope and possibility in the stories I choose to tell -  a sense that even in the darkest times, we can find the strength to persevere and come through it stronger and more at peace on the other side.

How does the work you do with Wolf Kitten Pictures continue to drive you in the creative or professional space, and why does it matter to you personally?

I think it's all I know how to do, it's all I've ever wanted to do, and I want to continue making movies through the lens of my life experience as a woman and a feminist.

You already touched on how important being a feminist is to you - what is your perspective on the role of women in genre today, and where do you see the most meaningful change happening?

I think genre movies are evolving more quickly than other areas of the business actually. I think exploitation and films that use exploitation as a mechanism to win views will always exist but I think the greater culture of inclusion in the genre world is what allows women to be gaining a greater foothold towards equal representation.

Participating in Cannes is one way to contribute to the endeavour for equal representation. What else does participating in this Cannes genre platform mean for your work, and what are you hoping it helps unlock or amplify?

I hope it helps get the word out about my debut feature Noxturne and my company Wolf Kitten Pictures that produced it. I want as many people as possible to watch it and go on this back-breaking ride with me ;) pun intended
