CLAIRE DARCH – SHE SPOTLIGHT

Actor / Director / Intimacy Coordination Trainee

Based in United Kingdom

In this She Spotlight, Johanna sits down with Claire Darch -  an actor and emerging filmmaker whose work is shaped by a deep interest in storytelling, human connection and the wellbeing of those involved in the creative process. As she expands into directing and intimacy coordination, her focus centres on creating safe, respectful environments where powerful and honest stories can be told.

You’ve described your journey into the industry as one that began in front of the camera and evolved into a wider interest in storytelling. Looking back, what first drew you into this world, and what kind of change are you hoping to make through your work now?

I began my journey in this industry as an actor, drawn to the emotional depth and human connection that storytelling allows.

Spending time in front of the camera gave me a firsthand understanding of vulnerability, collaboration, and the responsibility that comes with bringing characters to life. It was through these experiences that I developed a deeper curiosity about the wider creative process - what shapes a story, how performances are guided, and how meaning is constructed behind the scenes.

That curiosity naturally evolved into a strong interest in directing. I became fascinated by the ability to craft narratives from a broader perspective - building worlds, guiding performances, and creating stories that resonate on a deeper level.

At the same time, my experiences as an actor made me more aware of the importance of safety, trust and communication on set, particularly in sensitive scenes. This led me to pursue training in intimacy coordination, which feels like a natural extension of both my acting background and my growing interest in directing.

My aim is to contribute to an industry that values both powerful storytelling and the wellbeing of the people creating it - where actors feel safe enough to be fully expressive, and stories can be told with honesty, integrity and respect.

You’re currently focusing on training and building your skills across multiple areas of the industry. What are you stepping into right now, and why does it matter at this stage?

Right now, I’m focused on training in intimacy coordination while also taking additional courses in film directing and producing.

Alongside this, I’m actively networking, building connections and seeking opportunities to learn and grow within the industry.

This feels important because I want to be part of a film industry that not only tells meaningful stories, but also prioritises safety, trust and respect on set - especially in more vulnerable moments.

From the outside, your journey can appear very focused on the creative path. What’s something people wouldn’t necessarily see about your background?

One thing people wouldn’t necessarily see is the diverse path behind my journey.

Before moving into film, I worked in a corporate environment within project and risk management, and I’ve also spent time fostering children, helping to give them a stable start in life.

These experiences have shaped my sense of responsibility, care and structure, as well as my drive and ambition to achieve my goals. They’ve taught me resilience and the importance of creating safe, supportive environments where people can grow and thrive - something I carry into my creative work.

As you come into Cannes this year, what does the festival represent to you right now, and what are you hoping to make happen while you’re there?

At this stage of my journey, Cannes represents a space for exposure, growth and connection - where creative work can meet the right people and opportunities.

While I’m there, I’m hoping to build meaningful relationships, share my vision with the right audience, support others on their journey, and open doors to collaborations that can take my work to the next level.

You’ve spoken about collaboration and community as central to your approach. What does “building collective power” mean to you in practice, and who are you hoping to connect with next?

For me, building collective power means working together in a way that amplifies everyone’s voice, resources and impact, rather than operating in isolation.

In practice, it’s about sharing opportunities, knowledge and support so that we can all move forward together. Being part of the She Squad strengthens that sense of community and shared growth.

I’m especially passionate about creating spaces where underrepresented voices feel seen, supported and empowered.

Looking ahead, I’m keen to connect with people who are collaborative, purpose-driven and open to co-creating - particularly filmmakers, creatives and producers who value long-term relationships, bold storytelling and meaningful impact.

Claire Darch will be joining the She Squad at Cannes 2026.
